I love this time of year. The pause between Christmas and New Year’s. For me, it’s always a time to reflect on the year just past and plan for the year ahead.
If I had to sum up 2017 in one word, it would be – unsettled.
The first half of the year is a blur. Dealing with the emotional fallout of my marriage breakup, clearing out and selling the family home, dealing with Centrelink. Having no income for 3 months, trying to find a rental property with no job, no rental history and no money in the bank! After many applications, eventually success! And then the physical and mental exhaustion of moving house. Dealing with lawyers and conveyancers and the ex, until finally the property settlement was through and I could breathe again.
Then came the fun of trying to find a job after 15 years out of the “proper” workforce with outdated skills. Reinventing myself, highlighting the skills my volunteering work had produced, applying for jobs. First interview in close to 20 years – eeek! – until finally someone took a chance on me.
Now the challenge of balancing work, time with the Teen and my other commitments. Learning how to carve out the time for my writing and begin again.
The past year has taught me a lot, given me more confidence, shown me that I can handle whatever is thrown at me. I’ve made new friends, received amazing support from existing ones, not to mention my family. Thank you to everyone 🙂
There have been some great highs as well as the lows – my niece’s wedding, our travel, the Teen achieving his Australian Scout Medallion, releasing Elsie’s Place – to name a few.
Hopefully 2018 will be smoother sailing and more productive. I’m busy working on my goals and can’t wait to see what the year will bring!
Happy New Year!
