It’s hard to believe that the RWA conference was only 3 weeks ago. In some ways, it seems like months since 300+ romance writers gathered together at the Novotel, Olympic Park in Sydney; in other ways, it’s like it was last week!

Over the weekend, I had a non-writer friend ask me if I’d enjoyed the conference? (Does a bear… well, you know… πŸ™‚ ) and what was the best thing about it?

The current brain fog I have due to a cold wasn’t the only reason I took a few minutes to answer her.

What was the best thing about conference?

highteaWas it the craft workshops and sessions and guest speakers? Well, certainly they were extremely useful and enjoyable. (Especially enjoyable were the ones featuring videos of Richard Armitage!) I learnt something in every single workshop I did, from the mind-blowing “why didn’t I know that before?” to the “ah that will add a nice touch to my manuscript”. Both James Scott Bell and Cherry Adair were fantastic speakers.

Was it the social occasions? Β The high tea, the cocktail party, the awards dinner? They were fantastic – great food, lots of fun and laughter, as well as inspiration. And did I mention how great the food was?! (And who can forget Emma Darcy’s jaw-dropping 5 F’s of romance writing!)

Was it meeting up with old friends and making new ones?Β  Yes, that was a huge part of it. This was my 4th conference and I’ve gone from being totally intimidated at how loud and friendly everyone was (conference 1), to being the one squealing at the sight of old friends and sweeping people into hugs myself (conference 4!) (Yes, I admit it – at conference, I squeal and hug. A lot!) I have never met a friendlier group of people than romance writers and just being with people who “get you” is soul quenching.

So, what was the best thing about conference?

Honestly, I can’t pick just one.

It’s all of them.

It’s the whole, crazy, exhausting long weekend of laughter and learning, dressing up and dining out, talking about GMCs and HEAs and being with my BFFs πŸ™‚ It’s absorbing the knowledge, soaking up the friendships, and not having to cook and wash dishes for the entire time πŸ™‚ It’s the whole package – I can’t pick one aspect.

Actually, maybe, I can think of one – the best thing about conference – I get to do it all over again, next year πŸ™‚
